How can we train researchers and designers to guide society’s digital transformation towards inclusive and sustainable futures? DCODE (Fundamentals of Design Competence for Our Digital World) is a Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) that addresses this urgent question. The project brings together a European consortium of seven world-class universities, working in close collaboration with industry, government, and civil society stakeholders. Over four years, DCODE has united 40 researchers from 20 countries, supported by a €4 million budget, to pioneer new approaches to digital transformation that are democratic, responsible, and more-than-human. Through interdisciplinary training, practice-based research, and public engagement, DCODE equips a new generation of designers and researchers to shape technologies that matter—ethically, ecologically, and socially.
